This Week . . .
The UCLA women's tennis team heads to Fresno, Calif. for NCAA Regionals this Saturday and Sunday, hosted by Fresno State University. UCLA (7-17) will take on Georgia Tech (11-11) in the second match on Saturday. In the other match of the regional, No. 11 Fresno State (20-4) will take on Cal State Northridge (22-8). Saturday's winners will advance to Sunday's regional final, with the winner advancing to the 16-team NCAA Championship Finals, May 17-20 in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Four Bruins Selected for NCAA Individual Championships . . .
Whether UCLA advances to the team championships or not, the Bruins will send four players to take part in the NCAA individual championships, May 21-25 in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Sara Walker has been selected for both the singles and doubles draw. Walker and partner Mariko Fritz-Krockow, the 2001 Pac-10 Champions, make up one of the two UCLA doubles teams selected. The other team heading to Georgia will be the Bruin tandem of Lauren Fisher and Petya Marinova.
UCLA in the NCAA Tournament . . .
UCLA and Stanford are the only schools to make every NCAA Tournament since it began back in 1982. The Bruins are making a record 19th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In 1998, UCLA made its first appearance in NCAA Regional competition after being selected as an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championships the previous 16 years. The 1999 season marked the first year that the Bruins did not qualify for the 16-Team NCAA Championships after losing in the regional final to South Alabama.
Bruins vs. the NCAA Regional Field . . .
UCLA is 1-0 all-time against Georgia Tech. In the only meeting between the two schools, UCLA posted a 6-0 decision over the Yellow Jackets in last year's NCAA Regional Final at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins were undefeated against Fresno State heading into this season, however the Bulldogs registered a 5-2 win over UCLA on Feb. 23 at the LATC, making the all-time series 3-1. UCLA is 6-0 all-time against Cal State Northridge, with the last meeting between the two schools coming in 2000.
UCLA in the ITA Team and Individual Rankings . . .
As a team, UCLA checked in at No. 30 in the ITA rankings released on May 2. New team rankings will be released May 9. Individual rankings were also released May 2 and Sara Walker is ranked 18th in the country, followed by Catherine Hawley at No. 88. In doubles, Lauren Fisher and Petya Marinova check in at No. 18.
Walker Named First-Team All-Pac-10 . . .
For the second consecutive season, Sara Walker was voted first-team All-Pac-10 by conference coaches. The No. 1 player all season, she posted a 21-10 overall singles record and teamed with freshman Mariko Fritz-Krockow to win the Pac-10 Doubles Championship in Ojai. Walker was named first-team All-Pac-10 in 2000 after winning the conference singles championship. She was also named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year last season as well.
