UCLA Track Team Hosts First Home Meet

The Bruins will compete in their first home meet of the season Saturday, March 31, at Drake Stadium. The UCLA women and men will host Azusa Pacific, CS Los Angeles and UC Irvine in a quadrangular meet. Field events will begin with the hammer throws at 9:30 am, followed by the remaining field events at 10:30 am. The running events will start at 12:30 pm. The meet will be quadrangular scoring only (9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1: eight places for all events except relays. 9-7-6-5: four places for relays).

UCLA will end its 14-day break this Saturday. The Bruins last competed outdoors at Berkeley, March 17, against California, Washington and Washington State. The Bruin men finished first with a score of 213.5, while the UCLA women placed second with 200 points behind Washington State with 202.

Three weeks ago, the Bruins competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The women won their second consecutive team title, led by senior Christina Tolson. Tolson led the Bruins by winning the shot put title with a throw of 55' 9 3/4" (17.01m). Scott Moser led the men by placing eighth in the shot put with a throw of 61' 8 1/4" (18.80m).

The CS Los Angeles women enter Saturday's meet after placing fourth at the NCAA Indoor Div. II championships. They are led by Indoor All American Nicole Duncan, the 1999 and 2001 NCAA Indoor Long Jump champion. Also competing for the Golden Eagles are Indoor All Americans Shaela Luter, Rita Mejia and Louise Ayetotche, the 2001 Indoor 55m champion. The men are led by junior Robert Gray, who placed fourth in the 100m dash at the conference championships in a time of 11.12.

The Azusa Pacific men enter the meet after a successful indoor season. They placed second at the NAIA Indoor Championships and were the 2000 NAIA Outdoor runners-up. The Cougars are led by Bryan Clay, the 2000 US Junior decathlon champion. The women are led by Sarah Roberts, the 1999 NAIA javelin champion.

The UC Irvine Anteaters enter Saturday's meet after hosting the Spring Break Invitational (March 24). The UCI women's team finished fourth with 219 points and the Irvine men placed fifth with 177.5 points. Leading the women will be academic All American Kareen Nilsson, whose mark of 16:45.04 in the 5,000m is an NCAA provisional time. The men are led by junior Joseph Rodan, who ran the 10th fastest time in Anteater history in the 110m HH in 14.51.
