LONG BEACH, CA - Long Beach State (30-9) scored one run in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim a 2-1 win over the Bruins (23-18) on Tuesday night at Blair Field in front of 1,335 fans.
Tito Cruz hit an RBI-single with one out to drive in Mike Hofius in the bottom of the ninth inning to clinch the win for Long Beach State. Hofius had singled earlier in the frame.
The Bruins put up the first run of the game in the top of the eighth frame to take a 1-0 lead. Preston Griffin's lead-off single would start off the frame before he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Svetlic. Griffin went to third on a single by Wes Whisler. With runners at the corners, Ryan McCarthy's bunt single would bring Griffin in and both McCarthy and Whisler would take another base on an error by the third baseman. Heading into the bottom of the eighth, UCLA led 1-0.
Long Beach State tied up the score in the bottom of the frame when pinch hitter Sean Boatright doubled in Josh Buhagiar in from first base with one out. Center fielder Jarrad Page would prevent the 49ers from adding another when he threw out Boatright trying to cross home plate on a single later in the frame. With 49ers on first and second, Bruin reliever Daniel Reid struck out Jason Vargas to end the Long Beach State threat. At the end of eight, the score was tied at 1-1.
Bruin starter David Johnson put together a stellar performance in his fifth start of the season. The junior threw a career-high seven scoreless innings, while holding the to 49ers four hits.
McCarthy led the Bruin offense with three hits and the night's only Bruin RBI.
UCLA will returh home on Friday night to host crosstown rival and Pac-10 foe USC. Senior right-hander Casey Janssen will start for the Bruins.
