This Week . . .
UCLA was scheduled to compete at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Madison, Wisc. Feb. 17-20, however with several key players nursing injuries, the No. 8 Bruins have pulled out of the tournament. The Bruins won't be in action again until Thursday, Feb. 24 when they host Loyola Marymount at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The No. 8 ranked UCLA women's tennis team pulled out a close 5-4 victory over Oregon in Eugene this past Friday. With the match tied at 3-3 heading into doubles play, the Bruins won two of three doubles matches to secure the 5-4 decision. In singles action, Sara Walker improved to 20-4 on the season and 5-0 in dual-match action, beating No. 61 Alina Wygnowska 6-2, 6-3. Abigail Spears, seeing her first action at No. 2 singles after playing the five previous matches at No. 4, beat Monika Gieczys 6-2, 6-3. Also impressive on the afternoon was Annica Cooper, who won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 slot.
Freshmen Duo Making Immediate Impact . . .
In UCLA's 5-4 win over Oregon on Friday, freshmen Sara Walker and Abigail Spears not only played in the top two singles positions, they each improved to 6-0 in dual-match competition as well. With her win over No. 61 Alina Wygonowska or Oregon, Walker, the team's No. 1 player in four of UCLA's six matches this season, improved to 20-4 on the season. On Jan. 16 she won both the singles and doubles titles (w/Basic) at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, becoming the first freshman ever to do so. Spears, ranked No. 9 nationally in the USTA Girl's 18s division last year as a junior, is 13-5 overall this season and ranked No. 34 in doubles with teammate Elizabeth Schmidt.
UCLA in the ITA Rankings . . .
As a team, UCLA debuted at No. 8 in the Fall ITA rankings. The next rankings will be released on Wed., Feb. 16. In the latest Fall individual rankings, No. 46 Sara Walker and No. 85 Annica Cooper are ranked in singles. Petya Marinova and Walker are UCLA's highest ranked team at No. 19 and are followed by Abigail Spears and Elizabeth Schmidt at No. 34.
Walker Featured in SI's "Faces in the Crowd" . . .
Last week's edition of Sports Illustrated featured Bruin freshman Sara Walker, who won both the singles and doubles titles at the prestigious National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Jan. 16. En route to the championship, she defeated teammate Amanda Basica 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals and No. 4 ranked Jewel Peterson of USC 7-5, 6-0 in the final. Ranked No. 46 in the latest ITA rankings, Walker is currently 6-0 in dual-match play and her 20-4 (.833) overall singles record is the best on the team.
