Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Top-seeded Tobias Clemens won two matches Friday to advance to the quarterfinals at the 2004 Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Clemens, the two-time defending champion at Sherwood, defeated USC's Adam Loucks in the first round. He then defeated Cal's Patrick Briaud to set up a quarterfinal meeting with USC's Drew Hoskins.
Junior Alberto Francis also moved into the quarterfinals, defeating Cal's Balazs Veress and USC's Johan Berg in the first and second rounds respectively.
Both third-seeded Chris Lam and Philipp Gruendler won their opening round matches but fell the second round. Lam defeated Cal's Tyler Browne and lost to USC's Jamil Al-Agba. Gruendler upset eight-seeded Sam Warburg of Stanford before falling to Hoskins of USC.
Singles action continues Saturday along with doubles play.
