Bruins Win Quad Meet in Home Opener

In today's home opener, the Bruin women scored 238 points for the victory. Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo scored 127 points, followed by Cal State Fullerton (117) and Cal State L.A. (71). In all, UCLA won 14 events. Eleven Bruins also had NCAA Regional qualifying marks.

Leading the way was sophomore Chelsea Johnson, who won the pole vault. Johnson vaulted a personal best and NCAA record breaking 14-9 (4.50m) for the victory. The height is a Drake Stadium and UCLA school record. Oregon's Becky Holliday set the previous mark of 14-8 (4.47m) last season.

There was a pair of dual event winners today. Junior Monique Henderson won the 100m and 200m dash in 11.71 (-1.1) and 23.66 (-1.4), respectively. Both times are regional qualifiers. Redshirt freshman Kamaiya Warren won the shot put, 51-2.75/15.61m, and discus, 150-4/45.82m. Her shot put mark is a regional qualifier. And, true freshman MacKenzie Hill won the 400m and 110m hurdles in 56.31 and 14.24 (0.8), respectively. Hill's 110m hurdles time is a regional qualifier.

Other victorious Bruins were Melissa McBain (800m, 2:08.96PR, RQ), Alejandra Barrientos (1500m, 4:30.82, RQ), Valerie Flores (5000m, 17:25.52), Cari Soong (hammer, 207-7/63.28m) and Karina Powell (javelin, 138-10/42.33m).

UCLA's 400m and 1600m relays were also victorious today. The 400m relay squad of Hill, Kiyoko Guillory, Henderson and Adia McKinnon won in 46.27. And, the 1600m relay team Jennifer Esser, McBain, Allison Hall and Barrientos won in 3:53.88.

Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo had four event winners today. LeBren Martin won the 400m hurdles in 1:01.17. Katie Murphy won the 3000m Steeplechase in 10:48.08. Kaylene Wagner cleared 6-0.75 (1.85m) to win the high jump. And, Courtney Stafford won the triple jump with a distance of 41-1 (12.52m).

Cal State Fullerton's Mychael Westervelt won the long jump with a distance of 18-11.75 (5.78m).

Looking Ahead
A Bruin contingent will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships, held March 12-13, in Fayetteville, AR.

Bruins will compete at the Benny Brown Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, on March 13.

The next UCLA home meet is the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, April 8-10, at Drake Stadium. UCLA will also host the annual dual meet against the USC Trojans on Saturday, May 1.
