Bruins Edge No. 24 Cal, 4-3 at the LATC

April 8, 2006

LOS ANGELES - Bruin junior Chris Surapol's come-from-behind victory at No. 4 singles propelled the 11th-ranked UCLA men's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over No. 24 Cal Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, UCLA (15-4) moves into sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 with a 4-0 record. Cal falls to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

With the dual match tied at 3-3, Surapol battled back from a set down to defeat Daniel Sebescen, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, giving UCLA the 4-3 win. It marks the Bruins' second victory over the Golden Bears this season, as UCLA took a 6-1 win in Berkeley back on Feb. 3.

Although UCLA began the day by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, Cal came out firing in singles play, winning the first set on five of six courts. The Golden Bears evened the match when 11th-ranked Conor Niland upset top-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel, 6-3, 6-4 at court No. 1. It marks only the fourth loss of the season for Kohlloeffel, who is now 34-4 overall. He took over the nation's No. 1 ranking for the first time in his career last week.

UCLA would take a 3-1 lead when Michael Look (court No. 5) and Haythem Abid (court No. 2) posted wins over Ken Nakahara and Tyler Browne, respectively.

Cal, however, wasn't done yet, as the Golden Bears took the next two matches to tie it at 3-3. Lennart Maack downed Bruin sophomore Mathieu Dehaine, 7-6(10), 6-1 at court No. 3, while Dean Wallace edged Jeremy Drean, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 at court No. 6.

Wallace's victory set the stage for Surapol's match-clinching win at court No. 4, as the Bruin junior gutted out a three-set win before a large, vocal crowd that had crammed into the back court bleachers.

Saturday marked the Bruins' final home match of the regular season. UCLA will play its final three matches on the road, traveling to Oregon (Apr. 14), Washington (Apr. 15) and USC (Apr. 21).
