UCLA Drops No. 17 NC State, 7-2

Raleigh, N.C. - The UCLA baseball team handed No. 17 NC State its first home loss of the season with a 7-2 win over the Wolfpack on Friday afternoon at Doak Field. With the win, the Bruins improve to 7-9 while the Wolfpack drops to 13-2.

Junior Hector Ambriz led the Bruins on the mound and at the plate. Ambriz (2-3) tossed 6.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts to earn the win. He also went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and four RBI.

Senior Chris Jensen went 1-for-3 from the plate and three RBI, and sophomore Mike Metzger went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

UCLA jumped to an early 3-0 lead on the Wolfpack in the first inning with some extra base hits. Freshman Jermaine Curtis nailed a one-out triple off the center field wall, followed by a sacrifice fly by Jensen that was dropped by the left fielder Jeremy Synan to score Curtis from third and give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Ambriz then hit a two-run home run to right field with two-outs to pick up Jensen and put the Bruins up by three runs.

NC State cut into the Bruins lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Brian Aragon to score Matt Camp from third base and put the Wolfpack on the scoreboard at 3-1.

The Wolfpack put another run up in the fourth inning to cut the Bruins' lead to 3-2. NC State third baseman Matt Mangini singled and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Ambriz. Jeremy Synan followed with a one-out single up the middle to score Mangini from second.

Ambriz put the Bruins up 4-2 in the sixth inning on a two-out single down the right field line to score Curtis from third after he reached on an error to open the inning.

UCLA rallied in the seventh inning for two more runs to go up 6-2. Metzger got things going with a one-out single to right field. Freshman Ryan Babineau and Curtis walked to load the bases, followed by a two-RBI single to right with two outs by Jensen to score Metzger from third and Babineau from second base.

NC State loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but junior Paul Oseguera came out of the bullpen in relief to strikeout Mangini swinging and end the Wolfpack threat.

Oseguera pitched 2.1 innings with four strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.

Ambriz reached on a fielder's choice with one out and bases loaded to score freshman Brandon Crawford from third base for the Bruins' seventh run of the game.

NC State was 8-0 at home entering Friday's game.

The Bruins and the Wolfpack will play game two of their three-game series on Saturday, March 4 at Doak Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
