Los Angeles - The third-ranked UCLA women's water polo team used a high-powered offense and stingy defense to run away with a 22-2 win over visiting Occidental on Sunday afternoon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The win improves the Bruins to 19-2 on the season while the Tigers fall to 8-8.
UCLA's 22 goals tied its team season high mark, as the Bruins posted 22 goals against Cal State Bakersfield in the first match of the season.
A total of 13 Bruins scored goals in the match, led by freshman Tanya Gandy's four goal performance. Seniors Katherine Belden and Kristina Kunkel, junior Kacy Kunkel, sophomore Courtney Mathewson, and freshmen Anne Belden and Katie Rulon each scored two goals apiece.
Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Fullen finished with five saves.
UCLA raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first period before a goal by Occidental's Sarah Sweney with 0:15 left put the Tigers on the board at 6-1. The Bruins would shutout the Tigers in the second period while posting seven goals to build a commanding 13-1 lead at the half.
UCLA would hold Occidental to another goose egg in the third period and added four more goals for a 17-1 lead going into the final period of play. Five more Bruin goals would go in the net to Occidental's one in the fourth to give UCLA a season-high 22 goals, and a 22-2 victory.
UCLA will next be in action on Wednesday, March 29 in Honolulu, Hawaii, when the Bruins take on Hartwick at 1 p.m.
