LOS ANGELES -The No. 4-ranked UCLA men's tennis team slipped past No. 18 Stanford, 4-3 in a dual match Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, UCLA improves to 11-1 on the season and has now won three in a row over the Cardinal. Stanford drops to 6-4 overall with the loss.

Both teams started the afternoon in a tight battle for the doubles point. After splitting matches on court Nos. 2 and 3, the point was decided at the No. 1 position, where second-ranked KC Corkery and Sam Warburg of Stanford battled back to register a 9-7 decision over No. 44 Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Luben Pampoulov.

Although they had lost the doubles point, the Bruins came out firing in singles play, quickly taking three straight-set victories to take a 3-1 lead in the dual match. First to finish was court No. 2, where Kohlloeffel, ranked 10th nationally, turned in the most dominating performance of the day, defeating No. 31 Corkery, 6-2, 6-0. Bruin senior Alberto Francis followed that up with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Stanford's Phil Kao at the No. 5 position. Next to finish was court No. 6, where freshman Jeremy Drean was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Jon Wong.

With the Bruins just one point away from clinching the match, play was suspended for over an hour due to rain. At that point, Warburg was up a set and tied at 4-4 in the second with Pampoulov at court No. 1. UCLA's Kris Kwinta had just split sets with Phil Sheng at court No. 3, while back on court No. 4, UCLA's Chris Lam was a game away from forcing a third set with James Wan.

When play resumed, Stanford quickly brought the match to 3-2 when Warburg won the first two games to defeat Pampoulov, 7-5, 6-4. UCLA, however, clinched the match shortly thereafter when Kwinta defeated Sheng, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the final contest of the afternoon, Wan defeated Lam, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

The Bruins are in action at the LATC again tomorrow, hosting No. 30 Cal beginning at 1:00 p.m.
