Early Goal Gives #12 UCLA 1-0 Win Over #22 UC Santa Barbara

Box Score

Oct. 20, 2005

Los Angeles, CA - A third-minute goal by freshman defender Brad Rusin was all 12th-ranked UCLA needed as it shut out 22nd-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, at Frank W. Marshall Field.

Bruin forward Kamani Hill sent a free kick in to the box, and the 6-4 Rusin headed it into the back of the net past UCSB goalkeeper Kyle Renish for his first goal of the season.

UCSB was quick to attack after the Bruin goal, as midfielder Bryan Byrne smacked a shot off the left post in the fourth minute. He collected the rebound and took a second shot that was blocked by the Bruin defense. Byrne was snakebit again in the 20th minute, hitting the right post. Midfielder Nate Boyden also had a pair of chances in the 35th minute. Boyden's first shot was stopped by a marvelous kick save by Bruin goalkeeper Eric Reed, and Boyden's follow-up attempt went wide.

The second half was more of a defensive struggle, with UCSB tallying three shots to UCLA's two. Byrne had a shot in the 68th minute that Reed made a diving save on, and defender Andy Iro took a good crack at a shot in the 70th minute that UCLA defender Marvell Wynne blocked. UCLA played excellent defense in the waning minutes to keep UCSB from mounting an attack and nearly got a second goal in the 85th minute when Sal Zizzo got free on a breakaway, but Santa Barbara came up with a good defensive play to force Zizzo's shot wide.

Reed earned his eighth solo shutout of the season and UCLA's 10th overall. The Bruins have yet to allow a goal at home in 2005.

UCLA improves its record to 8-3-2, while UC Santa Barbara drops to 7-3-3.
