Gainesville, FL - The 11th-seeded UCLA women's tennis team pulled out an exciting comeback in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament in Gainesville, FL, this afternoon, beating sixth-seeded Washington, 4-3.

The Bruins began the afternoon by taking the doubles point. Laura Gordon and Sara Walker, the 46th-ranked doubles team in the nation, beat Erin Boisclair and Erin Hoe, 8-3, but Washington responded with a win by Dinka Hadzic and Darija Klaic over Anya Loncaric and Susi Wild, 8-6. Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir defeated Colleen Gray and Dea Sumantri, 8-2, to secure the point.

Washington charged out to a 3-1 lead by winning on courts two, three, and six in singles. First, Boisclair defeated Wild on court three, 6-2, 6-3. Klaic followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court two over Carleton, and Hadzic gave the Huskies their third point of the day by beating Loncaric on court six, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

But the Bruins took control of the match at that point. Walker put the Bruins within 3-2 when Washington's Sumantri retired in the second set. Walker was two games from clinching the point, having won the first set 6-4 and tied the second set 5-5.

Esseghir tied the match with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Gray, and Gordon applied the clincher with a tiebreak win over Hoe, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).

With the win, the Bruins clinched their third top-five finish in four years. UCLA will face third-seeded Duke tomorrow at 7 a.m. Pacific Time, 10 a.m. in Gainesville. Duke is the only top-eight seed that UCLA has not faced this year, though the Bruins did defeat the Blue Devils 4-3 last season at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
