Bruins Draw UCSB in NCAA First Round

May 2, 2002

Los Angeles - The UCLA men's tennis team will host NCAA Regional competition, May 11-12 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

On May 11, the Pac-10 champion and No. 4-seeded Bruins (19-4) will face Big West champion UC Santa Barbara (14-9) in the first round. The other first round match that day will feature Mountain West champion San Diego State (17-8) and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champ Hampton (15-6). The winners of both matches on Saturday will meet in the second round on Sunday. Sunday's winner advances to the round of 16 and the NCAA Championships, May 18-27 in College Station, TX. Texas A&M University is the host school.

Hampton is the only school that UCLA has not faced this year. The Bruins defeated UCSB, 6-1 back on Jan. 16 and San Diego State, 5-2 on Feb. 19. Both of those matches were at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA also had three singles players qualify for the individual tournament, as Tobias Clemens, Rodrigo Grilli and Marcin Matkowski all received bids. Jean-Julien Rojer will team with Matkowski in the doubles draw, as will Clemens and Lassi Ketola.
