Fullerton, Calif. - No. 9 Cal State Fullerton (8-4) used a five run second inning and a four run fourth inning to pull away from UCLA (5-9) for a 12-6 win on Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field.
Freshman Cody Decker led the Bruins going 2-for-4 from the plate with a home run and two runs scored, and freshman Jermaine Curtis went 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Anthony Norman went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, and freshman Blair Dunlap went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
UCLA, starting six freshmen in the lineup, jumped on the scoreboard in the top of second inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Titans, the Bruins' first lead in the series. Decker led off the inning with a single to left center for his first career hit. Curtis followed with a one-out RBI triple to right center field to score Decker from first. Senior Josh Roenicke smacked a two-out single to center field to pick up Curtis from third and give the Bruins a 2-0 edge.
The Bruins ran into trouble in the bottom of the second inning as the Titans took advantage of two balks, three walks, a passed ball, three base hits and a hit by pitch to put up five runs in the inning and take a 5-2 lead.
UCLA added a run in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. Dunlap doubled down the left field line to open the inning. Freshman Brandon Crawford grounded out to second base to advance Dunlap to third, followed by a ground out to third base by Senior Chris Jensen to score Dunlap.
Cal State Fullerton pushed over another run in the bottom of the third inning to go up 6-3 on a RBI single through the right side by John Curtis to score Brandon Tripp from second after Tripp doubled off the center field wall to open the inning.
The Titans added four more runs in the fourth inning, capped off by a two-run home run to center field by Tripp with two outs to extend their lead to 10-3.
UCLA put another run on the scoreboard in the sixth inning, as Norman drilled a one-out triple down the left field line. Curtis followed with a ground out to shortstop to score Norman from third and cut the Titans' lead to 10-4.
The Bruins added two runs in the eighth inning on a solo home run to deep left center by Decker, and a RBI double down the left field line by freshman Eddie Murray, his first collegiate career hit, to score Curtis from first base and put the score at 11-6.
The Bruins will travel to Long Beach State on Tuesday, Feb. 28 for a matchup with the Dirtbags at Blair Field. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
