Three Bruins Selected In 2001 MLS SuperDraft

Feb. 5, 2001

Ft. Lauderdale, FL - Three members of the 2000 UCLA men's soccer team were selected by MLS teams in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft today.

The Colorado Rapids made senior defender Ryan Lee (Alta Loma, CA) the first Bruin to be drafted in 2001, selecting the Bruin co-captain as the eighth pick in the third round. Lee was a second-team All-Far West and first-team All-Pac-10 selection last year and was also voted by his teammates as the team's Defensive MVP.

Senior forward McKinley Tennyson Jr. (Indianapolis, IN) was chosen as the third pick in the fourth round by the Columbus Crew. Tennyson ended his UCLA career ranked No. 9 in the school record books for career points (102), No. 10 for career goals (40), No. 2 for career multiple-goal games (8) and No. 5 for career game-winning goals (10). He finished fourth in voting for the Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year Award and was also a nominee for the Hermann Trophy. Tennyson earned second-team NSCAA All-America and first-team NSCAA All-Far West honors in 2000.

The New England Revolution made senior playmaker Shaun Tsakiris (Saratoga, CA) the sixth pick in the fifth round. This past season, Tsakiris earned second-team NSCAA All-America and first-team NSCAA All-Far West honors after record nine goals and nine assists for 27 points.

With the three draft selections, UCLA extends its streak to six years of having at least three players drafted by MLS teams. Last season, there were a league-high 22 former Bruins in MLS, and a total of 29 have been on MLS teams since 1996.
