UCLA senior Christina Tolson, from Fountain Valley, on Tuesday was named the Pacific-10 Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her efforts at last week's Texas Relays. This is the first week the Conference Office issued Pac-10 Athlete of the Week honors (the weekly honors will continue until the Pac-10 Championships, May 19-20 at Berkeley).
At the Texas Relays, Tolson won the shot put (56-1 1/4, season-best, NCAA automatic) and was second in the hammer throw (207-11, ties season-best, NCAA automatic).
On the current national collegiate best marks list, Tolson's 56-1 1/4 in the shot put leads the nation and her 207-11 hammer throw is No. 2.
Last March at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, AR, Tolson led the Bruin women to their second consecutive national indoor title. She won the shot put (55-9 3/4) and placed second in the weight throw (68-9 3/4).
At last year's NCAA Outdoor, Tolson earned All-American honors twice, placing fifth in both the shot put (52-9 1/2) and hammer throw (203-6). At the 2000 Pac-10 Championships, Tolson won the hammer (208-5) and is the conference record-holder (208-11) in that event.
The Bruin women and men on Saturday (April 14) will host their final home meet of the season at Drake Stadium, vs. Nebraska and CS Northridge. The hammer throws will start at 9:30 a.m. and the running events begin at noon.
