By: UCLA Athletics

November 10, 1998

LOS ANGELES -- In the December issue of Track & Field News, the magazine selects the incoming UCLA women's recruiting class as No. 1 in the nation and the Bruin men's class got an honorable mention nod.

The Bruin women were selected ahead of No. 2 LSU, No. 3 South Carolina, No. 4 Minnesota and No. 5 Texas A&M.

According to T & F News: "National-class names galore bolster the Bruins, led by top-rated LJer Keyon Soley (20-10 3/4) who also brings 11.49 speed. HSR setter Tracey O'Hara (13-3) and Heather Sickler (12-3 1/2) provide a 1-2 PV punch. Chaniqua Ross adds 50- 3/4/177-1 throws power, while Ysanne Williams (2:09.21), Bumni Ogunleye (53.75) and Elaine Canchola (4:37.7) boost the track side.

Here's a list of the UCLA men's incoming class-- (HS)--Joe Alexander (64- 1/ 2), Martin Brix (4:14.48), John Clamon (61-7), Lovell Houston (13.7), Joe Hunter (21.34/21.03w), Darren Marble (6-10 1/4), Nathaniel Maran (210-10 JT int), Justin Pantananan(4:15.92). Also in the December issue, T & FN also has a "Quickie NCAA Preview", looking at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor meet. The UCLA women are picked to finish second, behind Texas. Last year, that's exactly how the teams finished in the Outdoor, with Texas winning and UCLA placing second. Bruin junior Seilala Sua is also predicted to defend her two-time discus title, as well as winning the shot put. Also at the 1997 Outdoor, the Bruin men were sixth but were not selected in the 1999 predictions.

Four Selected To U. S. Track and Field Hall of Fame, Including Three Bruins
Four U. S. track and field standouts, including three Bruins, were recently elected to the U. S. Track and Field Hall of Fame in Indianapolis, IN.

The Bruins enshrined were--hurdler Greg Foster, distance runner Francie Larrieu-Smith and high jumper Dwight Stones. They were joined by discus thrower Jay Silvester.

Stones, who also attended Long Beach State, was an 11-time National Champion and world-record holder from Glendale. He set his first world-record in 1973, clearing 7-6 1/2. He pushed the record to 7-7 in 1976 and then 7-7 1/4, two months later. He became the first flop jumper to set a world record. While at UCLA in 1972 at the NCAA Outdoor, Stones was third in the high jump.

Foster, the 110m hurdles gold medalist in the first three world championships, won a silver medal at the 1984 Olympics and set world indoor records in 1986 and '87. He also won 10 national titles, indoors and outdoors. While at UCLA from 1977-80 under head coach Jim Bush, the Bruins won the NCAA title in 1978. Individually at the NCAA Outdoor, in 1978 Foster won the high hurdles; in 1979, he won the 200m and in 1980, he won the high hurdles and was third in the 200m.

Larrieu-Smith set 35 American records at distances from 1,000m to two miles and won 21 national titles from 1969-1992. While at UCLA in 1974, the Bruin women placed second at the AIAW Outdoor and Larrieu won three events--880 (2:10), mile (4:59.4) and two-mile (10:56.6).
