This weekend (May 11-12) the UCLA women and men's track & field teams competed at the Modesto and Occidental Invitationals.
Also this weekend in Pullman, WA, Washington State hosted the Pacific-10 Heptathlon and Decathlon Championships. For the Bruin men, senior Octavious Gillespie placed seventh in the decathlon, with 6,765 points, picking up two points for Art Venegas' UCLA men's team. Also competing for the Bruins in the conference decathlon meet was junior Andrew Phillips, placing 10th with 6,464 points. The Bruin women did not have an entry in the heptathlon (Washington State's Ellannee Richardson won the event, with 5,821 points).
The 2002 Pac-10 T & F team championships will continue next weekend (May 18-19) in Pullman.
Bruin Men At Pac-10 Decathlon in Pullman, WA
Gillespie's point total of 6,765 points was a season-high. His event-by-event results were ' Day One (Saturday, May 11, 3,571, season-best) - 11th best mark in the 100m (11.79, -1.0w, 693 points), second in the long jump (season-best 22-8, +2.4w, 792 points), fourth in the shot put (season-best 42-1 1/4, 657 points), third in the high jump (season-best 6-6 3/4, 803 points), 11th in the 400m (season-best 54.32, 626 points); Day Two (Sunday, May 12, 3,194 points, season-best) ' seventh best mark in the 110m hurdles (season-best 15.86, 0.5w, 749 points), fifth in the discus (117-5, 580 points), eighth (tie) in the pole vault (season-best 12-9 1/2, 590 points), first in the javelin (season-best in the decathlon, 198-7, 746 points) and 10th in the 1500m (season-best 5:05.39, 529 points).
On Saturday, the UCLA men's vaulters competed in Modesto. In the men's open competition, senior Tyronne Hazen and sophomore Pat Luke, tied for fifth (17-0 3/4, personal-bests for both vaulters), senior C. J. Bell tied for 13th (16-0 3/4) and senior Joe Snee no-heighted.
On Saturday, several of the Bruin men's team competed at the Occidental Invitational.
Pacing the Bruin men on the track were ' senior Michael Lipscomb won the 200m (20.71, nwi), sophomore Nick Thornton was the top collegian in the 800m (1:49.30, personal-best), freshman Ben Aragon won the 1500m (3:53.51) and senior Andrew Wulf was the second collegian (3:56.52), and freshman Shane Hackett won the pole vault (16-5 1/4, personal-best).
In the field, Bruin throwing great John Godina won both the men's shot put (66-11 1/4) and discus (207-5). In the men's shot put, junior Scott Wiegand was the top collegiate finisher (62-3) and the third collegian in the men's discus (175-7). In the men's discus, sophomore Dan Ames was the top collegian (189-5) and the third college competitor in the shot put (58-10 3/4).
Senior Scott Moser won the hammer throw (205-6).
