UCLA Women Lead NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships With 22.50 Points After Day One

After the first day of competition, the Bruins lead all competitors with 22.50 points. Trailing the Bruins are Clemson (18) and Houston (16).

In the first day finals, Christina Tolson captured the shot put title with a mark of 55' 9 3/4" (17.01m). Freshman Jessica Cosby finished fifth with a mark of 53'5" (16.28m). In the high jump finals, Darnesha Griffith finished fourth with a mark of 6'0" (1.83m). Senior Michelle Perry finished fifth in the 60mH finals in a time of 8.25 (8.22 preliminary time). Senior Steve Michels did not place in the men's pole vault final.

In the 60m dash prelims, Shakedia Jones advanced to the finals on Saturday with a time of 7.36. Sophomore Ysanne Williams did not qualify for the 800m run finals on Saturday. Her time of 2:08.07 ranked her ninth among competitors, only the top eight advanced.

Tomorrow, seven Bruins will be competing: Christina Tolson and Cari Soong (weight throw), Dan Ames and Scott Moser (men's shot put), Deana Simmons (triple jump), Shakedia Jones (60m) and Tracy O'Hara, who looks to defend her pole vault title.
