Bruins Second after First Round of Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic

The UCLA women's golf team is in second place after the first round of the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic at Menifee Lakes Country Club.

The Bruins posted a team score of 299, 11-over par, and trail first place Pepperdine by two shots. California is third at 302, followed by Oklahoma at 303 and San Francisco at 304.

Individually for UCLA, freshman Charlotte Mayorkas posted an even par score of 72 and is tied for fourth. Junior Vivan Phosomran is tied for 11th at 74, freshman Yvonne Choe is tied for 24th at 76 and sophomore Johanna Andersson is tied for 35th at 77. Sophomore Melissa Martin is tied for 64th at 80.

Several UCLA individuals also posted solid scores. Senior Alicia Um posted a one-under par 71 and is tied for second place with Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright. Sophomore Gina Umeck is tied for fourth at 72 and teammate Krystal Shearer is tied for 21st at 75. Freshman Kristin Thompson is tied for 44th at 78 and sophomore Saki Uechi is tied for 55th at 79.

UC Irvine's Walailak Satarak fired a two-under par score of 70 to take the first round lead. After Wright and Um in second place, Natalie Newren of BYU is tied with Mayorkas and Umeck for fourth at 72. Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum, Oregon's Jess Carlyon, New Mexico's Kristi Larsen and California's Ria Quiazon are tied for seventh at 73.

The second round is expected to be completed before sundown Monday.
