NO. 4 BRUINS USE PECK'S HAT TRICK IN VICTORY OVER UC IRVINE
Fourth-ranked UCLA scored three unanswered second-half goals as the Bruins held off No. 5 UC Irvine for a 6-4 victory Saturday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. UCI took a 4-3 lead at halftime on the strength of two extra-man goals by junior Dreason Barry. UCLA senior Brett Ormsby scored the lone goal of the third quarter with 1:09 left to knot the game at 4-4. Bruins' sophomore Logan Powell scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a power play with 2:39 left in the game for a 5-4 lead and senior Ted Peck scored his third goal of the game with 1:21 remaining for insurance. Five of the Bruins' scores were extra-man goals. Senior goalie Joe Axelrad had six saves for UCLA, which improved to 6-2 on the season.
UCLA AMONG 20 TEAMS COMPETING FOR NOR CAL TOURNEY TITLE
Just two weeks after taking fourth place at the USC-hosted SoCal Tournament, UCLA will travel to Stockton and the University of Pacific this weekend to compete against 18 of the nation's top 20 water polo teams. Because of their top four finish at SoCal, the Bruins receive a first-match bye and will play their first contest at 12:50 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the #11 Navy vs. Santa Clara match (8:10 a.m.). Should the Bruins win their first match, they would then square off against the winner of #5 UC Irvine and #8 Long Beach State.
TWO BRUINS SEARCHING FOR MILESTONES
As UCLA enters the fourth week of the 2004 season, two members of the Bruin water polo family are approaching historic milestones. Head Coach Adam Krikorian, with 98 men's water polo head coaching wins, is just two victories away from notching career win #100. Krikorian is in his sixth season as head coach of both the UCLA men's and women's teams and has already tallied a combined 238 wins. Also, three-time All-American Brett Ormsby is just three goals shy of reaching 200 for his career. With one goal Saturday against UCI, Ormsby raised his season total to 26 and his career total to 197. UCLA's career goals leader is Alexis Rousseau, who notched 290 scores from 1986-1989.
HEAD COACH Adam Krikorian
A bastion of the UCLA men's water polo program as a player and coach, Adam Krikorian begins his sixth season as head coach for both the men's and women's programs and his 11th season on the Bruin staff. After sharing the head coaching duties with Guy Baker for two seasons, Krikorian is in his sixth season alone at the helm of the two programs. A winner of nine national championships as a player and a coach, Krikorian has amassed a 98- 32 record in his six seasons with the UCLA men's team. With two NCAA Water Polo titles, he ranks second in the nation among active water polo coaches.
