Bruins Battle USC Feb. 13 No. 8 women's tennis squad downed Pepperdine last week.

This Week - Bruins Travel Across Town To USC
The rivalry with USC rises to the forefront this weekend as No. 8 ranked UCLA travels across town to play at No. 13 ranked USC on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Noon. Both teams enter the week with perfect 5-0 records and are 2-0 in Pac-10 Conference action.

About This Week's Opponents - USC
Ranked No. 13 in the nation entering the year, USC also enters the week 5-0 in dual-matches, but hosts Colorado today before hosting UCLA Saturday. The Women of Troy have three players listed in the singles rankings and one in doubles. Ditta Huber, who plays in the top slot for the Women of Troy, is listed No. 13, Kara Warkentin is tied for No. 48 and Jacqui Boyd is tied for No. 83. In doubles, Huber and Warkentin are listed No. 30. Last year, UCLA registered a pair of 5-4 victories over USC to pull closer in the all-time series (27-30).

Last Week - Bruins Defeat Pepperdine, 5-1
Due to a change in the schedule, the No. 8 ranked Bruin women's tennis team played at non-conference rival Pepperdine on Tuesday, Feb. 2 in its only dual match of the week. UCLA defeated Pepperdine 5-1 with wins in the top five positions and did not play doubles. The victory avenged two losses to the Waves last year and improved the Bruins record to 5-0 overall, while Pepperdine suffered its first loss of the season.

Amanda Basica was the only Bruin to win in straight sets as she defeated Anh Nguyen 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 position. The Bruins' only loss came in the No. 6 slot where Rochelle Raiss lost to Cintia Tortorella 7-5, 6-1. The other four matches went the distance with UCLA prevailing in all four. In the No. 1 slot, No. 11 ranked Cristina Popescu battled back to defeat No. 42 Angela Lawrence 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Annica Cooper also came back for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over Ipek Sengolu in the No. 2 position. Brandi Fruedenberg held off Nicola Kaiwai 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 on court No. 4. In the No. 5 slot, Petya Marinova outlasted Nadine Rastetter 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

The Bruins also sent individuals to the Rolex National Indoor Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas, Feb. 4-7. Competing in the singles draw, sophomore Cristina Popescu suffered a 6-3, 7-5 first round loss at the hands of Houston's Sarah Borwell. The Bruins' doubles team of juniors Amanda Basica and Annica Cooper registered a 6-4, 6-4 first round win over Kelly Brown and Massoumeh Emami of Kentucky, then fell 6-1, 6-1 at the hands of top-seeded Vanessa Castellano and Marissa Catlin of Georgia.

Next Up - Bruins Travel To National Team Indoors
An early indicator of how the best teams in the nation match up against each other comes at the USTA National Team Indoor Championships to be hosted by the University of Wisconsin in Madison Feb. 18-21.

The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. 'A Celebration of Champions dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.
