No. 2 Bruins Edge Cowboys, 4-2

Feb. 17, 2005

CHICAGO - The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's tennis team defeated Oklahoma State, 4-2 Thursday in opening round action of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Mid-Town Tennis Club. With the win, UCLA (9-0) moves on to the quarterfinals and will face ninth-seeded Virginia on Friday at Noon (CST). The Cavaliers (6-0) posted a 4-1 decision over No. 7 Stanford on Thursday.

With the Bruins leading the match 3-2, eighth-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel clinched the win for UCLA at the No. 2 position, recording a 6-1, 6-7(2), 7-6(3) victory over No. 115 Tomas Bohunicky. Down 5-4 in the deciding set, Kohlloeffel was actually able to fight off two match points on Bohunicky's serve. Had Kohlloeffel lost his match, the Cowboys would've been in a great position to pull off the upset, as over on court No. 6, OSU's Daniel Byrnes was leading 5-3 in the third set of his match with UCLA freshman Jeremy Drean.

In addition to Kohlloeffel, three other Bruins posted singles wins for UCLA. First to finish was court No. 5, where 99th-ranked Kris Kwinta was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Juan Felipe Diaz. Moments later at the No. 4 position, No. 39 Alberto Francis registered a 6-2, 6-1 win over Artsem Burmistrau. Chris Lam was also a straight-set winner, defeating Boris Kuharic, 6-4, 7-6(10).

OSU's two points on the day came where the Bruins have traditionally been their most dominant this season. The Cowboys became the first team to win the doubles point against UCLA this year, posting wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. OSU recorded its other point at the No. 1 singles position, where No. 44 Mark Van Elden was a 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 winner over No. 14 Luben Pampoulov. It marked only the second loss this season for Pampoulov, who falls to 19-2 overall.
