Bruin Swimmers Score 45 Points in First Day of NCAA Championships

Complete Updated NCAA Results

Auburn, AL - After the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships, held at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center, the Bruins are in ninth place after six events with 45 points. Host Auburn is in first place with 168.5 points, followed by Georgia in second with 123 points and Texas with 114 points. Rounding out the top-five are Southern Methodist and Stanford, which scored 104 and 81.5 points, respectively.

Top individual performers for the Bruins were juniors Sara Platzer and Malin Svahnstrom. Platzer (Lakewood, WA/Lakes) placed 11th in the 50 Free in 22.77. Svahnstrom (Upplands Vasby, SWE/Vilunda Gymnasium) was 12th in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:00.02. And, in the one-meter springboard, senior Regan Gosnell (Potomac, MD/Holton Arms) placed 20th, scoring 254.65 points.

The Bruin Relays also turned in strong performances. The 200 Free Relay team of freshman Kim Vandenberg (Moraga, CA/Campolindo), Platzer, senior Erica Shugart (Santa Barbara, CA/Carpinteria) and Svahnstrom placed seventh in 1:31.30. The 400 Medley Relay of juniors Taylor Spivey (Atlanta, GA/The Lovett School), Leslie Hovsepian (Rancho Mirage, CA/Cathedral City), Kristen Lewis (Moraga, CA/Campolindo) and Platzer placed 12th in 3:40.44.

In the 500 Free preliminaries, junior Jackie Lobdell (Gig Harbor, WA/Gig Harbor) was 25th (4:48.59). In the 200 IM prelims, sophomore Lindsey Smart (Stockton, CA/Lincoln) was 32nd (2:02.40) and junior Brooke Winkler (Los Altos, CA/St. Francis) tied for 41st (2:03.44). And, in the 50 Free prelims, Shugart tied for 40th (23.35) and Vandenberg tied for 48th (23.39).

Bruins earning All-America honors for yesterday's performances are Platzer (50 Free, 200 Free Relay, 400 Medley Relay), Svahnstrom (200 IM, 200 Free Relay), Vandenberg (200 Free Relay), Shugart (200 Free Relay), Spivey (400 Medley Relay), Hovsepian (400 Medley Relay) and Lewis (400 Medley Relay).
