April 23, 2005

While the varsity and second varsity eight were battling the cold weather at Lake Phalen, MN; the varsity four, third varsity eight, and novice eight enjoyed racing at their home course when LMU hosted the Bruins and Stanford at Marina Del Rey on Saturday, April 23. The Bruins enjoyed a successful weekend, with wins in the varsity four and third varsity eight. The novice eight earned a close second place when they competed against LMU's second varsity eight.

The varsity four finished the 2000 meter course in a time of 7:45.0. LMU followed behind with a time of 8:36.6, and Stanford came in third with a time of 8:45.6. The varsity four battled a slight head wind and a slack tide during their race on Ballona Creek. The line-up for the race was: Bailey Blosser (stroke), Elizabeth Herron, Erika Roby, Alexandra Banis and Megan McQuown (cox).

"It was great that the varsity four worked so hard, given they were so much faster than their opponents," says Assistant Coach Bill Zack. "They did a pretty good job of executing the race plan and working on the finishing sprint. In a few weeks we have a pretty difficult race, and this weekend was preperation for that."

UCLA's third varsity eight battled incoming tides to capture first in their event, overcoming Marina rivals LMU with a time of 7:36.6, 9.7 seconds ahead of LMU. The line-up for this race was: Jessica Meredith (stroke), Anna Lindel, Alexis Kalionzes, Kirsten Moore, Kathryn Guerrero, Heather Whitney, Andrea Wesolowski, Brittany Merchant, Francesca Chang (cox).

UCLA's novice eight experienced a rise in the competition when they were put against LMU's second varsity eight. While the Bruins weren't able to overcome the experience of the second varsity team, they finished 6.6 seconds behind LMU, who had a winning time of 7:24.0. The line-up for this race was: Maida Habibovic (stroke), Katherine Vaughan, Sarah Miller, Mattison Pasion, Nicole Lundholm, Shadia Ghoneim, Clara Cartwright, Sarah Lombardo, Emily Gibson (cox).

"The novice eight weren't expected to defeat a LMU's second varsity, but we asked them to lead LMU to the 500 meter mark, which they did, and they stayed with them until the 1100 meter before LMU broke away" says Zack. "They did a great job to come in that close to a second varsity crew."

The Bruins will return to competition on May 14 when they compete in the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships in Rancho Cordova, CA. The following day, the Bruins will face five other top 20 teams when they race at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships.
