Haythem Abid vs. USC's Dejan Cvetkovic

LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team captured the doubles point and then took four of six matches in singles play, downing 26th-ranked USC, 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, UCLA (10-3) extends its home winning streak over USC (6-5) to 16 in a row. The Bruins' last home loss to the Trojans was on Apr. 3, 1991.

UCLA came out inspired in doubles play, taking matches on all three courts to claim the point. The Bruins clinched the point at court No. 3, where Mathieu Dehaine and Aaron Yovan downed Dejan Cvetkovic/Whit Livingston, 8-4.

Once singles play began, Bruin junior Chris Surapol gave UCLA a 2-0 advantage in the match when he posted a 7-6(0), 6-2 victory over Jeff Kazarian at court No. 4. Next to finish was court No. 6, where USC's Chong Wang put the Trojans on the board with a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Yovan.

In the featured match of the afternoon, third-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel put the Bruins within a point of clinching the dual when he recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jamil Al-Agba at court No. 1.

The Trojans, however, did not go down without a fight. Sophomore Kaes Van't Hof cut the lead to 3-2 following his 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 win over Dehaine at court No. 3. At that point, the two remaining singles matches were very tight and the Trojans needed both to pull off the upset.

The match eventually came down to court No. 2, where freshman Haythem Abid dashed USC's hopes of a comeback when he knocked off Cvetkovic 7-6(4), 7-6(5) to give UCLA a 4-2 lead and the dual-match win.

In the final match of the afternoon, Bruin freshman Michael Look defeated Adam Loucks, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 position.

UCLA heads to La Jolla, Calif. this Thursday to compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships. The Bruins' next dual match will be a home meeting with Baylor on Mar. 11.
