Five home runs from Washington (35-15, 10-8 PAC-10) led to a 13-2 loss for the Bruins (24-28, 8-10 Pac-10) on senior day at Jackie Robinson Stadium. In the loss, UCLA said farewell to seniors Kevin Jerkens, Mike Kunes, Christian Lewis, Doug Silva and Warren Trott.
The Huskies showed their offensive power early, posting four runs in the first two innings. The offensive output chased Bruin starter Mike Kunes who fell to 4-2 on the season with the loss.
Washington continued to put runs on the board with home runs from Mike Wagner and Nick Batkoski in the fifth frame. After five innings, UCLA trailed 6-0.
John Otness hit home runs in back-to-back at-bats in the sixth and seventh innings. His round-tripper in the sixth was a solo shot, while the homer in the seventh brought in three runs. After seven innings, the Bruins were down 11-0.
The Huskies added two runs in the eighth and ninth innings, before UCLA got on the board in the bottom of the ninth. A lead-off double from pinch hitter Sean Carpenter started the rally. after two-outs, Preston Griffin followed with another double, which brought Carpenter in. A double from Brett McMillan, his team-leading 14th of the season drove in Griffin.
UCLA will be back in action on Tuesday in a 3:00 p.m. match-up at Pepperdine. Freshman right-hander Hector Ambriz will get the start for the Bruins.
