Bruins Send Cougars Packing

Jan. 26, 2005

LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked UCLA men's tennis team continued its shutout streak Wednesday, dispatching of BYU, 7-0 in a non-conference showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. It marks the first time since 1987 and only the third time in the last 25 years that a UCLA squad has started the season by shutting out its first four opponents.

UCLA (4-0) set the tone from the very beginning, as the Bruins were able to sweep all three doubles matches for the first time this year. Following an 8-4 win at court No. 3, the Bruins posted a pair of 8-3 victories at court Nos. 1 and 2.

The Bruins didn't let up there, quickly taking the upper hand in singles play as well. First to finish was court No. 1, where Luben Pampoulov pushed his record to 18-0 on the year following a 6-2, 6-0 win over 82nd-ranked Jeff Das. Right next door on court No. 2, Benjamin Kohlloeffel gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead in the match when he cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Nima Roshan.

UCLA clinched the dual-match victory at court No. 4, where Alberto Francis was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over BYU's Dominik Kaufhold. With the match already clinched in UCLA's favor, Kris Kwinta, Mathieu Dehaine and Chris Lam all posted victories for the Bruins. Dehaine was the only Bruin extended to three sets Wednesday, as he overcame a difficult second set to defeat James Ludlow, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Lam's straight-set victory over Christian Hand at court No. 3 was especially satisfying for the Bruin senior, as he suffered a three-set loss to Hand a year ago at the LATC.

BYU (2-1) came into Los Angeles with a little extra incentive, as five members of the Cougars' team hail from Southern California. Additionally, BYU's head coach Brad Pearce is a former UCLA All-American.

UCLA returns to action this Friday, hosting UC Irvine at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m.
