AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Chris Sands fell to No. 3 seed Francisco Rodriguez of Alabama 6-2, 7-5 today. The first round singles main draw loss knocks Sands out of the ITA All-American Championships.
Earlier in the tournament, Sands survived two pre-qualifying matches and two qualifying games to advance to today's first round main draw.
The 1999 Reebok/ITA Men's All-American Championships is the toughest hard-court event of the fall collegiate season with over 350 competitors expected to participate in the two qualfying tournaments and the main draw. The main draw consists of 64-player singles and 32-player doubles. The singles draw features 48 players who have received automatic tournament berths into the main draw and 16 survivors from the qualifying tournament. Played annually since 1979, the nine-day tournament is loaded with some of the top collegiate players in the country.
