Craddock, Everhart, Munguia, Landers, Rider and Garza Advance at NCAA Championships

June 7, 2006

Six Bruin men advanced in their respective events on day one of the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, CA to lead UCLA, setting up a chance for numerous All-American honors.

Senior Craig Everhart automatically advanced to Friday's 400m semifinal after finishing second in heat three as he equaled his season-best of 45.68. Overall, Everhart's time was the seventh-fastest on the day.

In the 110m hurdles, freshman Kevin Craddock advanced to the semifinal round after clocking 13.90 in heat three (No. 3 in his heat/No. 9 overall). In the semifinals, Craddock finished fifth in heat one (13.78) and ninth overall for the final spot in Friday's final.

Senior Martell Munguia finished third in heat four of the 800m (ninth overall), running a lifetime-best 1:47.95 to advance to Thursday's semifinal race. His new best moves him from No. 10 to No. 7 all-time at UCLA, one spot ahead of current sprint coach Tony Veney.

In the pole vault, junior Mike Landers cleared the automatic mark of 17-4.50 to advance to Friday's championship final. Junior David Shortenhaus finished 22nd overall with a clearance of 16-4.75.

Two Bruins advanced to the finals of the discus on Wednesday night - junior Jason Rider and sophomore Greg Garza. Rider placed 10th overall with a throw of 181-5, while Garza was 12th with a best mark of 181-2.

Sophomore Joel Tuosto finished 24th in the long jump with a mark of 22-4.25 and did not advance to tomorrow's final.

Freshman Boldizsar Kocsor just missed a spot in the hammer final after finishing 13th with a best mark of 204-11. During his first season competing as a Bruin, Kocsor broke the freshman hammer record on numerous occasions, won the Pac-10 title and moved to No. 2 all-time at UCLA (219-5). Although he is not competing in the final, Kocsor could earn All-American honors due to the number of foreign athletes in this year's competition.

Looking Ahead
On Thursday, competition continues for several UCLA athletes - seniors Jeremy Silverman and Jake Knight in the shot put prelim (5:30 pm); sophomore Joel Tuosto in the long jump final (6:30 pm); and Munguia in the 800m semifinal (5:05 pm).
