UCLA Takes Commanding Lead into Final Round of Pac-10 Championships

The 11th ranked UCLA men's golf team extended its lead entering the final round of the Pac-10 Championships Tuesday at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.

UCLA posted a team score of 355, five-under par, and extended its lead to 23 shots over second place Arizona. The Bruins' 54-hole team total of 1,081 is one-over par and the sixth-ranked Wildcats are next at 1,104, 24-over par. Stanford is third at 1,109, followed by fourth place Washington at 1,114 and Arizona State at 1,119. In sixth place is Oregon State at 1,125, followed by Oregon at 1,128 and California is eighth at 1,141. In ninth place is USC at 1,142, followed by Washington State at 1,143.

The Men's Pac-10 Championship is a 72-hole event with the best five out of six scores counting.

Individually, the Bruins' foursome of juniors is in the hunt for the conference title. John Merrick is tied for the lead at three-under par 213 after posting a round of 69 on Tuesday. Steve Conway is fourth at one-under par 215 after a 69 and Travis Johnson is fifth at even par 216 after carding a third round score of 71. Roy Moon is tied for seventh at two-over par 218. Sophomore John Poucher posted a score of 73 and is tied for 15th at 221. Freshman Spencer Levin is tied for 37th after posting a 73.

Merrick is tied with defending champion Jim Seki of Stanford. Second round leader Cameron MacKenzie fell to third place after a two-over par 74 Tuesday.

Final round action continues Wednesday.
