The UCLA women's golf team raced to a three-shot lead in the first round of the Arizona State Invitational Friday at the Karsten Course in Tempe, AZ.
The Bruins posted a school record team score of 282 and lead second place Texas by three shots after the first 18 holes. California is third at even par 288, followed by fourth-place Arizona at 294 and USC and New Mexico at 296 in fifth place.
UCLA sophomore Charlotte Mayorkas took the first round lead with an opening day score of 66, six-under par. The round was Mayorkas's collegiate best. Freshman Susie Mathews posted a one-under par score of 71 and is tied for fifth place, and junior Hana Kim posted an even par score of 72 and is tied for 10th. Junior Gina Umeck is tied for 15th at 73 and junior Krystal Shearer is tied for 85th. Junior Bridget Dwyer, playing as an individual, is tied for 64th after a first round 78.
Jessica Reese of Texas is in second place after posting a four-under par score of 68. Washington's Louise Friberg and Cal's Sarah Huarte are tied for third at two-under par 70.
Second round action continues Saturday.
