LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's water polo team, which has taken home three national collegiate titles in just four years of intercollegiate competition, will open the season this Saturday, February 6, at Stanford. The game, which starts at 12 noon, is an MPSF Conference match.
UCLA's Top Returning Players: UCLA returns two of its six All-Americans from the 1998 National Champion team, in junior Erin Golaboski (Severna Park, MD) and senior Katie Tenenbaum (Merced). In 1998, Golaboski placed onto the second team for the first time, and Tenenbaum earned an honorable mention nod for the second year in a row. All-Americans Robin Beauregard, Coralie Simmons and Catharine von Schwarz, who are competing on the U.S. Women's National Team, will redshirt the '99 season. Joining them is All-American goalie Nicolle Payne, who graduated last spring.
With the loss of Simmons, von Schwarz and Beauregard, senior tri-captains Tenenbaum, Amanda Gall (Placentia) and Mandy McAloon (Millersville, MD) are expected to lead the Bruins back to the national playoff picture. Both on offense and defense, McAloon, Gall and Tenenbaum will make enormous contributions. Last season, attacker Gall scored 28 goals, while set defense/ playmaker McAloon tallied 29 goals.
In addition, Golaboski, who will assume the role as goalkeeper after the loss of Payne, will be counted on to be the backbone of the team's defense. Although Golaboski tallied remarkable numbers as a field player last season, scoring 65 goals to make her the second-leading scorer on the team, she is also an experienced goalkeeper. In the 1997 season, she stepped into the cage for 10 games in place of the injured Payne. With Golaboski as goalkeeper, the Bruins went 10-0.
Head Coach Notes: Adam Krikorian, who is on his fifth year on the Bruin staff, will serve as interim head coach this season, filling in for head coach Guy Baker, who is currently coaching the U.S..... Women's National Team.
Upcoming matches: The Bruins travel to San Jose on Sunday, February 7, to play in an MPSF Conference game against San Jose State at 12 noon. Following this game, UCLA will compete in the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego in La Jolla. The Bruins will see non-league action Friday through Sunday, February 12- 14, with 12 teams competing in the round-robin competition.
Upcoming events: The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. "A Celebration of Champions" dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.
Bruins Host MPSF Tournament: The UCLA Women's Water Polo Team will host the MPSF Tournament this year. The event will be held at the Sunset Recreation Center, from April 9-11.
