The UCLA women's volleyball team has signed Becky Green to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Andy Banachowski announced today. Green joins Katie Carter, Rachell Johnson and Colby Lyman as UCLA's recruiting class for this year. The group will be joining the Bruins in the fall of 2003.
Becky Green is a 6-1 outside hitter from Huntington Beach, CA (Marina HS). An accomplished beach player, Green won several Under-18 tournaments last summer, and qualified to represent the United States in international competition for the summer of 2002. Indoors, Green has been named All-CIF selection for Marina High School. "Becky is a solid passer, and a reliable all-around player," said Banachowski. "She may be the most advanced player of this group."
Katie Carter, a 6-3 middle blocker from Steamboat Springs, CO, (Steamboat Springs HS), has earned All-State honors in Colorado, and recently led Steamboat Springs High School to the State Championship match. Carter was named to the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News All-Tournament team for the State Tournament, and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Western Slope League for the 2002 season. "Katie is an outstanding athlete," said Banachowski, "and I expect her to make an impact for us immediately."
Rachell Johnson is a 5-11 outside hitter from San Diego, CA, (Torrey Pines HS), who led Torrey Pines to the State Championship match in 2001, was named All-State last season, and was named a Pre-Season High School All-American in 2002. Her father, Dr. Ronn Johnson, was a basketball All-American at Biola University" Rachel will battle for a position on either antenna next fall," said Banachowski. "I expect that she will progress well during her club season and will be ready to contribute for us in the fall."
Colby Lyman is a 6-0 outside hitter from Los Altos, CA, (St. Francis HS), where she plays both volleyball and track and field. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the 2001 Santa Barbara tournament. A Pre-Season High School All-American, Lyman has earned All-League honors for St. Francis. She comes from an athletic family, as her brother, Chase, is a junior wide receiver at Cal, and her father Brad played football for the Bruins from 1969-72. "Colby is a left-handed right-side hitter who has great defensive skills and is an impressive athlete," said Banachowski.
"With this class, I think we have people with a great blend of athletic ability, jumping ability and volleyball skill. They will add to the depth of our team and challenge for playing time immediately next fall," said Banachowski. "I think that this will turn out to be one of the best classes we've had in several years."
