SAN DIEGO - The top-ranked UCLA softball team improved to 21-0 on Sunday afternoon in San Diego with a 3-0 victory over Nevada and a 4-0 win over Cal Poly. Sophomore Caitlin Benyi homered in each game for UCLA.
UCLA 3, Nevada 0
Batting as the visiting team, the Bruins recorded four hits and scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Andrea Duran started the rally with a one-out single to left, followed by Stephanie Ramos reaching on a Wolfpack error. Claire Sua then loaded the bases with a single to right, followed by an RBI single from Jodie Legaspi to score Duran for the first run of the game. After Zaplaotsch hit into a fielders choice with the out at the plate, pitcher Lisa Dodd scored Sua with a single to left field, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Caitlin Benyi pounded a one-out solo home run over the fence in center field, giving UCLA a 3-0 lead. The rally continued from there, as Andrea Duran got an infield hit, Ramos walked and Sua singled to left to load the bases. Emily Zaplatosch then stepped in with two outs, and was robbed of a grand slam when Wolfpack left fielder Sonia Rojo ran over the breakaway fence in left field and caught the ball beyond the plane of the outfield fence, but the play was ruled an inning-ending catch an out instead of a grand slam.
In the circle, Lisa Dodd pitched a complete game shutout, scattering two hits. She struck out four, including the final batter of the game for Nevada, and did not walk a batter.
UCLA 4, Cal Poly 0
The Bruins loaded the bases in the top of the first inning on two hits and a walk, but were unable to push a run across. UCLA also had runners at the corners with two outs in the second, but again could not score.
With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Caitlin Benyi opened the scoring with her second home run of the day, a solo shot to center field for her eighth home run of the season to give UCLA the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bruins put together a two-out rally, as Stephanie Ramos drew a walk, Claire Sua reached on an error and Jodie Legaspi clubbed her fourth home run of the season over the center field fence.
That was all that Keira Goerl would need, as she pitched a complete game shutout, striking out four. She improves to 12-0 on the season with the win.
The Bruins return to action on Thursday evening at the Clovis Auto Row Classic in Fresno, CA. The tournament is hosted by Fresno State.
