Five Bruins Selected on First Day of Major League Draft

June 7, 2004

Five Bruins were selected on the first day of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Wes Whisler was the first Bruin chosen, being drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the second round (53rd overall). Casey Janssen was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth round, the 117th selection overall. In the sixth round, the Texas Rangers selected Billy Susdorf, while Ryan McCarthy was also chosen by the White Sox in the ninth round. David Johnson was selected in the 15th round by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Whisler became UCLA's highest draft pick since Josh Karp in 2001 when he was selected in the second round on Monday. The 2002 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Whisler finished this season with seven home runs and 12 doubles. On the mound, the Noblesville, Indiana native was second on the Bruin squad with 60 strikeouts this season. In his three years in Westwood, Whisler has hit .304 with 34 home runs, while striking out 172 batters.

Janssen, a senior from Huntington Beach, went 10-4 in his final season at UCLA. He led the team with a 3.16 ERA and 103 strikeouts during the 2004 season. In his last start for the Bruins, he held Oklahoma to two hits over eight innings, as he was named to the All Regional Team in Oklahoma City. With 22 career wins, Janssen ranks tied for eighth in the UCLA record books. He is also tied for fifth with 44 career starts in Westwood.

A native of Newhall, Susdorf was second on the 2004 team with a .319 batting average. One of the Bruins' best hitters, Susdorf hit .318 in his first three years as a Bruin. Also a strong base runner, he stole seven bases in nine attempts during his junior year. At the Oklahoma City regional, Susdorf hit his fourth home run of the season after missing 27 games due to a broken knee cap.

With15 home runs and 15 doubles in his junior year, McCarthy was one of the most powerful Bruins in 2004. The Thousand Oaks native paced the team with a .531 slugging percentage and posted four multiple home run games this season. A three-year starter in the Bruin infield, McCarthy has 499 career assists and led the Pac-10 in that category with 215 this year.

The right-handed Johnson had an impressive junior season for the Bruins, posting a 4-3 record. The Manhattan Beach native picked up his fourth win of the season in the Oklahoma City regional as UCLA defeated Oklahoma 17-7. His 4.46 ERA ranked fourth on the team, as his 46 strikeouts were third on the staff.

With Johnson's selection in the 15th round, each member of the Bruins' 2004 weekend rotation has been drafted. Susdorf, an outfielder, and McCarthy, the starting Bruin shortstop, round out the Bruin draftees.
