LOS ANGELES - The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team picked up its sixth win of the season today against three defeats, beating No. 17 Fresno State 4-3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins swept the doubles matches, following it up with singles wins by Susi Wild, Sarah Gregg, and Laura Gordon.
On the doubles side, Sara Walker and Lauren Fisher beat Lucia Tallo and Lucia Sainz 8-4, while Jackie Carleton and Wild beat Chloe Carlotti and Kathrin Winterhalter 9-7. Gordon and Gregg completed the sweep, beating Vlatka Jovanovic and Kristy McRae 8-6.
Wild won her fifth straight singles match, defeating Lucia Sainz 6-1, 6-3. Gordon scored another straight-set victory for UCLA, beating Vlatka Jovanovic 7-6(0), 6-3. Gregg clinched the match for the Bruins when she defeated Lucia Tallo 6-1, 7-5.
Freshman Shilpa Joshi saw her first action of the dual-match season, filling in a spot created when Walker opted to rest for this weekend's matches against the Arizona schools. Joshi fell to Winterhalter 6-4, 6-1. McRae knocked off UCLA's Anya Loncaric 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 on court five, and No. 84 Carleton lost a tough match to Fresno State's only ranked singles player, No. 27 Carlotti, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(0).
UCLA will travel to Arizona this weekend to face Arizona State on Friday at 1:30 p.m. (MT) and Arizona on Saturday at noon (MT). The matches will not count toward the Pac-10 standings. The Bruins will have another home match a week from today against local rival Loyola Marymount at 1:30 p.m.
