Bruins In ITA National Rankings...

The Bruins continued to be the top-ranked team in the nation on the latest ITA rankings released on Feb. 28. UCLA received all eight first-place votes from the ITA National Ranking Committee for 600 points. Stanford remains at No. 2, followed by Duke, TCU, Texas A&M, Washington, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas and Mississippi in the top 10.

About The Trojans ...

Tuesday's match between UCLA and USC will be the first meeting among the squads this season and the 82nd meeting overall with the Bruins holding a 52-29 advantage in the all-time series. The Trojans are 7-1 this season and have won two straight matches, their last being a 5-2 win over 20th-ranked Fresno State on Feb. 21. USC is led by junior and 17th ranked Andrew Park and junior Ryan Moore, who play at No.1 and No. 2, respectively. Moore also teams with Nick Rainey at No. 1 in doubles. The pair are ranked No. 17 in the latest ITA rankings.

Scouting the Zona Schools ...

Friday's match with the Sun Devils will be the second meeting between the squads this season with the Bruins defeating Arizona State 4-3 on Jan. 28. The match, originally scheduled for Jan. 27 was postponed due to rain and continued the following day. Jean-Noel Grinda was the real standout for the Bruins after coming from behind to defeat Mirza Duranovic in a second tie-breaker, 6-1, 7-6 (7) to clinch the victory.

The 24th-ranked Arizona State (7-3, 2-1 Pac-10) is coming off a shutout of Loyola Marymount University on March 1. The Sun Devils are led by Nic Dubey and Matt Klinger, who play at No. 1 and No. 2. The Wildcats will try to avenge a 6-1 (Jan. 26) lost to the Bruins this Saturday. Freshman Tobias Clemens sealed the victory for the Bruins by defeating Tom Lloyd, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. The 52nd-ranked Arizona upset the 50th-ranked San Diego, 4-3, last Saturday (Mar. 3). Leading the way for the Cats are Steven Capriati and Tom Lloys, playing at No. 1 and 2, respectively.

UCLA At Pacific Coast Doubles...

The Bruins sent three doubles teams to compete in the 112th Pacific Coast Doubles tournament, held at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club from March 1-4. The tandem of Marcin Matkowski and Travis Rettenmaier were the real standouts as the pair won the doubles title, while the team of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer reached the quarterfinals and Chris Sands and Erfan Djahangiri reached the quarterfinals of the consolation round.

The road to the title was tough as Matkowski and Rettenmaier took care of first round opponent Joe Brooks and Matt Davis of College of William and Mary in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 in round one and USC's Andrew Park and Damian Spizzo, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. The pair then ran into a tough match in the round of 16, defeating San Diego State's Alexander Waske and Adam Webster 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, the tandem downed California's Lan Bale and John Paul Frutiero, 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(6) and defeated Stanford's Ali Ansari and Scotty Scott, 7-6(3), 6-3 to reach the title game. In the biggest upset of the tournament, the duo defeated the tournament's top-seeded team, USC's Ryan Moore and Nick Rainey to claim the title.

UCLA's No. 1 team of Grinda and Rojer defeated Cal's Hiro Nakumura and Audrey Vinogradsky 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and Pepperdine's Calle Hansen and Ryan Redondo Vinogradsky 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the round of 16. The pair upended Ben Miles and Balazs Veress, also from Cal, 7-5, 6-2 but then fell to Ansari and Scott of Stanford, 7-5, 6-4.

After a first round setback, the tandem of Chris Sands and Erfan Djahangiri reached the quarterfinals of the consolation round before bowing out to Michael Paradowski of San Diego and Simon Shen of UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, 6-4.
