BRUINS PLACE FIFTH AT NOR CAL TOURNAMENT: Joe Axelrad collected 10 saves and UCLA (8-4) jumped out to a lead which it never gave up en route to a 6-4 win over UC San Diego in the fifth-place match of the Nor Cal Tournament in Stanford.
The Bruins defeated UC Santa Barbara, 9-7 in the first match on Saturday. With the score tied at 6-6 in the third period, Brett Ormsby scored twice to give UCLA an advantage it would not surrender. In the second contest of the day, the Bruins met up with defending national champion Stanford and fell to the Cardinal 7-4. Despite another double-digit save performance by Axelrad, the Bruins allowed three goals in the second quarter and could not regain the lead. Grant Zider scored twice in the match.
The Bruins edged Long Beach State, 11-10 in an overtime match to advance to the fifth-place game. Ted Peck posted four goals, including the game winner in the second overtime period, to lead UCLA in the match. Josh Hewko posted his first hat trick of the season, while David Pietsch, John Briscoe and Peter Belden also found the back of the net.
THE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM: UCLA will host the U.S. National Team on Wednesday at 3:15 at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The exhibition match-up will pit the current Bruin team against former Bruins Brandon Brooks and Adam Wright.
This summer, the U.S. National Team claimed the Pan American gold medal in the Domincan Republic after finishing sixth in the World Championships. During their summer run, current Bruin Brett Ormsby played with Team USA.
ST. FRANCIS: Also visiting Sunset Canyon Recreation Center this week will be the St. Francis Terriers. The Bruins will face off with the Terriers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Terriers enter the week with a 13-4 mark and have won four consecutive matches. Currently ranked 14th in the most recent poll, St. Francis and UCLA have only met once before, with the Bruins claiming a victory.
BRUINS IN THE POLL: The Bruins moved back up in last week's Collegiate Coaches Water Polo Poll to fifth after spending a week ranked seventh. The poll is released every Wednesday during the season and can be found at www.collegiatewaterpolo.org.
