Lena Degteva to Represent Canada in World University Games

June 30, 1999

UCLA gymnast Lena Degteva will join two Bruin teammates at the World University Games, which will be held July 1-13 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Degteva will be Canada's lone representative in women's gymnastics.

Degteva, who is a five-time first-team All-American for UCLA, was Canada's all-around champion in 1995 and 1996 and the balance beam champion in 1994. She represented Canada in the 1994 and 1995 World Championships and the 1995 Pan American Games.

Degteva joins UCLA teammates Heidi Moneymaker and Mohini Bhardwaj, who are competing for the United States at the Games. UCLA assistant coach Steve Gerlach is the U.S. head coach.
