April 26, 2002

Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer squad handed out its 2001-02 team awards Friday night at the annual year-end banquet. Goalkeeper Zach Wells was honored as the Team MVP, Scot Thompson earned Defensive MVP honors, and Tim Pierce was selected the Offensive MVP.

Wells set a new school record in 2001 with 101 saves, the most by any UCLA player in a single-season. The redshirt sophomore from Costa Mesa, Calif. recorded a 0.85 goals against average and earned nine shutouts in 23 starts.

Thompson, one of just three Bruins to start all 23 games, helped the Bruin defense post nine shutouts and a team goals against average of 0.88. The junior from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors in 2001 and was also named to the all-tournament team at the UCLA Pacific Soccer Classic.

Pierce led the 2001 Bruins in scoring with 10 goals, four of which were game-winners, and 22 points. The junior forward from Dana Point, Calif. earned multiple honors last season, including first-team All-Pac-10 and third-team NSCAA All-Far West. He was twice named the Pac-10 Player of the Week and also earned recognition two times on Soccer America's Team of the Week.

Also honored were Aaron Lopez as Rookie of the Year, Ryan Valdez as Most Improved and Tony Lawson as Most Inspirational.
