Second-ranked Bruins Looking for Another Victory

March 7, 2005

UCLA's defending NCAA champion women's golf team travels to the San Jose State Invitational to be played at Corral del Tierra CC in Salinas, CA, Mar. 8-9.

Corral del Tierra CC will play to a par of 72 over 5,826 yards. The Bruins are the defending champions at this event after setting a school record last year with a score of 858 (-6).

Senior Charlotte Mayorkas is the defending individual champion after posting a 54-hole score of 211 (-5), another school record.

"We are excited to play in the San Jose State tournament," said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. "The golf course is fun, and it's a place where low scores are very likely to happen. It is great for building confidence and making a lot of birdies, and I'm sure that the team will make it happen."

The Bruins won their last event, the Arizona Wildcat Invitational, by one stroke over host Arizona. It was UCLA's second team title of the season and its first at this event since 1993. For Forsyth, the victory was her 13th as the Bruins' coach. Last year, UCLA set a school record by winning seven tournaments, including the NCAA title, and Forsyth earned NGCA Coach of the Year honors.

Two seniors, one junior, a sophomore and a freshman will represent the Bruins at the San Jose State Invitational. Senior All-American Charlotte Mayorkas continues her assault on the UCLA record books this spring. Mayorkas is seeking her sixth career tournament title, which would tie her for the UCLA record with Kay Cockerill. She placed second at Arizona, her third career runner-up finish. Mayorkas leads the team in scoring at 72.7.

Fifth-year senior Melissa Martin finished 11th in Arizona and ranks fourth on the team with a scoring average of 74.6. This season, Martin has two Top 20 finishes and boasts 10 in her career.

Junior All-American Susie Mathews also boasts a pair of runner-up finishes this season and ranks third in scoring at 73.7 after tying for 24th in Arizona. A two-time academic All-American, Mathews boasts nine career Top 10 finishes.

Sophomore All-American Hannah Jun recorded her best finish of the season, tying for eighth in the Bruins' last event. She owns six Top 10 finishes in 18 career appearances.

Freshman Amie Cochran of Torrance ranks third on the team in scoring at 73.6. She boasts three Top 10 finishes, including a victory at the Kent Youel Invitational in October. Her four rounds under par this season rank second on the team.
