Malibu, CA - Fourth-ranked UCLA opened its 2003 season with a 7-4 loss to fifth-ranked Pepperdine in the second match of the Pepperdine Tournament in Malibu. Brett Ormsby and Grant Zider each scored twice in the match.
The Waves jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the first quarter. Ormsby and Zider both posted goals in the frame, as Zider's score was the first of his UCLA career.
The teams each scored twice in the second frame, with Zider and Ormsby connecting again. Heading into halftime, UCLA trailed 5-4.
The Wave defense stifled the Bruins in the second half, as UCLA was unable to score again.
After a loss earlier in the day, the fourth-ranked UCLA men's water polo team picked up its first victory of 2003 with a 12-5 win over Cal Baptist in the Pepperdine Tournament. Driver Brett Ormsby recorded his first hat trick of the season in the victory, while eight other Bruins scored.
Ormsby opened the scoring with his first goal only 1:11 into the contest. He would add two more in the first quarter, helping UCLA to a 6-2 lead after the period. Grant Zider posted a goal in the quarter, while John Briscoe and Peter Belden also scored.
UCLA and Cal Baptist traded two goals in the second frame to give the Bruins an 8-4 advantage at the break. Belden found the back of the net again, while Ted Peck posted his first score of 2003.
The Bruins will be back in action tomorrow, when they play in their annual alumni game at 1:00 p.m. at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
