Los Angeles - The No. 12 UCLA women's tennis team won its fourth match in a row on Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, defeating the No. 8 Arizona State Sun Devils, 6-1. The Bruins took three out of four matches from the Arizona schools this season and improved their record to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in Pac-10 play. Arizona State falls to 8-5, 1-2 Pac-10.
UCLA swept the doubles point to take the early lead. Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir beat the 29th-ranked Arizona State duo of Lauren Colalillo and Adria Engel, 8-3. Laura Gordon and Sara Walker beat Mhairi Brown and Cindy Sureephong 8-5, while Sarah Gregg and Susi Wild beat Joslynn Burkett and Megan Yeats by the same score.
The Bruins won the singles matches at the first through fifth positions, taking each one in straight sets. In the day's lone battle of two nationally-ranked singles players, No. 10 Walker beat No. 14 Engel 7-6(6), 6-1. No. 23 Carleton beat Brown 6-2, 6-3, and No. 58 Wild defeated Colalillo 6-1, 6-0.
The Bruins will be back in action on Friday, April 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center against No. 4 California, and again on Saturday, April 5 at noon against No. 2 Stanford to close out the regular season home schedule.
