No. 1 Bruins to Host LMU, Arizona Schools

The No. 1-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (6-0) has a busy schedule this week, as the Bruins will host three matches at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The action starts this Wednesday when UCLA welcomes Loyola Marymount (2-4) for a 1:30 p.m. match. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the Bruins and Lions. On Friday, UCLA will host Arizona State (2-2) at 1:30 p.m. The Sun Devils, who have beaten the Bruins only once in 54 meetings, are coming off a 6-1 victory over LMU. UCLA rounds out the weekend against Arizona (4-1) this Saturday at Noon. UCLA leads the all-time series with Arizona, 50-0. All three matches can be followed live at UCLA's official website .

Bruins Improve to 6-0 with Victories Over USD, Ohio State . . .
Bruin freshman Aaron Yovan made his dual-match debut on Feb. 5, as UCLA blanked visiting San Diego, 7-0 at the LATC. Yovan, who posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles, was one of five other Bruins to register straight-set victories. On Feb. 7, UCLA defeated Ohio State, 5-2 at the LATC. Bruin junior Tobias Clemens turned in the most impressive performance of the afternoon, knocking off seventh-ranked Jeremy Wurtzman, 6-0, 7-6(4). Clemens also teamed with Lassi Ketola to clinch the doubles point.

Djahangiri Gets No. 100 Against Ohio State . . .
Bruin senior Erfan Djahangiri earned his 100th career singles victory against Ohio State on Friday. Djahangiri, who owns a 100-30 overall record at UCLA, has surpassed the 20-win mark in each of his first three years, finishing with a team-high 31 as a sophomore in 2001. He also won 28 matches as a freshman in 2000 and 26 as a junior last year. He is 15-3 overall heading into this week.

Lam First to Reach 20-Win Club . . .
With a 20-4 overall record, sophomore transfer Chris Lam is the first Bruin to reach 20 wins this year. He burst onto the scene in the fall, posting a 13-3 overall record, while reaching finals at the Omni Hotels Regionals and claiming the championship at the Southern California Intercollegiates. In addition to his 15-4 tournament record, the 40th-ranked Lam is perfect in dual-match play at 5-0.

Bruins Remain No. 1 in Latest ITA Poll . . .
The UCLA men's tennis team remained No. 1 in the latest ITA Team Rankings released on Feb. 5. There was no shift in the top-3 last week, as the Bruins were joined by Illinois and Baylor. With losses, both Stanford and Florida fell out of the top-5, making room for Cal and Mississippi. New team rankings will be released this Wednesday.

Several Bruins Listed Among Fall Singles Rankings . . .
The Bruins had three singles players ranked when the fall individual rankings were released on Jan. 13. Junior Tobias Clemens was ranked No. 12 in the nation followed by No. 38 Erfan Djahangiri and No. 40 Chris Lam. In doubles play, Clemens and senior Lassi Ketola checked in at No. 39. Marcin Matkowski, Rodrigo Grilli and Jean-Julien Rojer were not eligible for the rankings due to sitting out fall play. Individual rankings will not be released again until after Team Indoors on Feb. 26.

Former Bruin Earns Top Honor . . .
Former Bruin Mark Knowles (1990-92) and partner Daniel Nestor were recently named the 2002 ATP Doubles Team of the Year at the ATP's annual awards banquet in early Feb. Knowles and Nestor reunited in 2002, winning six titles and reaching 13 finals. The duo won the Australian Open as well as Tennis Masters Series titles in Indian Wells and Miami. They also reached Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Fox Sports Net to Televise USC Match on March 7 . . .
Fox Sports Net announced last week that it will televise UCLA's match against USC on Mar. 7 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The match will be aired on a tape-delayed basis and can be seen two days later on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 3:00 p.m. (PST).
