Rancho Cordova, CA - The No. 15 Bruins completed their first race at the NCAA championships today with a fifth place finish. All NCAA races are being held on Lake Natoma, in Rancho Cordova, CA. The Championships are hosted by Sacramento State and will occur today through Sunday, May 29. The Bruins raced against No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Princeton, No. 9 Harvard and No.12 Michigan in the second elimination heat for the Women's Division I Eight crews.
In the race, with 1500 meters to go, the Bruins had a slight advantage over Michigan, following closely behind top seeded Ohio State. Princeton crept away early in the race, coming in at the 500 meter mark over 2 seconds ahead of second place Harvard. At the halfway point, UCLA had given up their lead over Michigan, with the Bruins coming in just a bit over two seconds behind the Wolverines at this mark. Princeton continued to steam ahead, now making their distance between Harvard even farther, with a time difference of over three seconds at the halfway mark. With 500 meters to go, Princeton continued to maintain their lead, and Michigan kept their lead over UCLA. At the completion of the race (2000 meters), Princeton had over a three second margin of victory over second place finisher Harvard. Ohio State followed behind in third place, Michigan finished in fourth place, and UCLA ended the race in fifth place.
The top three finishers in each heat automatically qualifying for the semifinals on Saturday, May 28. The remaining seven teams will compete in an Eight Repechage at 4:00pm today. The top three finishers in this Repechage will then go on to the semi-finals, held at 10:30am and 10:45 on Saturday. The remaining four teams will compete for places 13-16 at 11:00am on Saturday.
With UCLA's finish in fifth place, the Bruins will go on to compete against Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee, Syracuse, USC, and Wisconsin in the Division I Eight Repechage today.
