Four Bruins Fall at the U.S. Women's Amateur

Aug. 11, 2004

All of four of UCLA's entrants in the 104th U.S. Women's Amateur fell in the first round of match play at the Kahkwa Club in Erie, PA on Wednesday. Incoming freshman Amie Cochran, who earned stroke play medalist honors on Tuesday, lost 1-up to Hsaio-Ching Lu of Chinese Taipei, who earned the 64th spot in an 11 for one playoff Wednesday morning. Lu watched an early 2-up lead evaporate on the eighth hole when Cochran birdied the par 5. The match remained square until Cochran made a par on the 13th and Lu bogeyed. Cochran held a 1-up lead until Lu birdied the 16th. Cochran's bogey on the 17th gave Lu a 1-up lead, which stood when both players halved the 18th. Senior Charlotte Mayorkas lost 1-up to Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh of Switzerland with a bogey on the final hole. Mayorkas lost a 3-up lead through 10 holes as Aazam-Zanganeh birdied the 11th, 13th and 18th holes. Fifth-year senior Gina Umeck fell 4 and 2 to Brianna Broderick of Richmond, MO. Broderick's birdie at the 16th clinched the match. Graduate Bridget Dwyer lost 2 and 1 to Tania Elosegui of Spain. Elosegui, who led the tournament after a first round 68 on Monday, was one-under par on the back nine Wednesday while Dwyer was three-over par. For complete results, click here.
