LOS ANGELES - UCLA completed a 2-0 week with a 30-28, 30-24, 30-20 victory over Oregon on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins were led offensively by double-figure kills from Brynn Murphy and Lauren Fendrick as they improve to 12-6 (5-3 Pac-10) on the season. Oregon falls to 10-10 (0-6 Pac-10).
The two teams battled evenly in the opening game of the match, which was tied at 28-28 before Bruin freshman Teryn Spragg was inserted into the match and downed a critical kill to give UCLA a one-point lead before a Cira Wright kill gave the Bruins a 30-28 game one victory.
The teams were even to the 20-20 point in the second game of the match before a three-point run put UCLA on top for good. Setter Haley Jorgensborg served the Bruins through a four-point rally to bring the team to game point. Consecutive service errors by UCLA, then Oregon, gave UCLA the 30-24 win and a 2-0 lead going into the break.
In the third game, UCLA started quickly, sprinting out to a 6-0 lead in a stretch that featured a service ace by Krystal McFarland and two kills by Wright. The Bruins would never look back, taking home the sweep with a 30-20 third game victory.
Brynn Murphy led the Bruins with 11 kills in the match, followed by Lauren Fendrick with 10. Murphy hit .444 for the match and added two blocks on the evening, a total that was shared by four Bruin players. Sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman led all players with 17 digs, and was joined in double-figure digs by Heather Cullen.
UCLA returns to action next Friday, October 18, with a Lexus Gauntlet match at USC. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm in the Lyon Center, and the match will be broadcast live on the internet at www.uclabruins.com.
