Irvine, Calif. - Junior LHP Paul Oseguera tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, and UCLA used a five-run fifth inning to earn an 8-4 win over UC Irvine on Tuesday night at Anteater Ballpark. The win improves UCLA to 28-21 overall while UCI drops to 32-19.
Oseguera (3-1) earned the win allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out six Anteaters.
Junior Hector Ambriz went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored, and freshmen Brandon Crawford and Jermaine Curtis each went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Freshman Tim Murphy went 2-for-3 with a RBI double and a run scored, and Freshman Ryan Babineau went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
UCLA went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Crawford walked to lead off the game, Curtis followed with a base hit to left, and junior Tim Stewart walked to load the bases with one out. With two outs, senior Sean Smith singled to left center field to score Crawford from third, and would have scored Curtis from second but Stewart was thrown out at third base before Curtis could cross home.
The Bruins loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning but could not capitalize. Babineau kept the inning alive with a two-out single up the middle, followed by a double down the right field line, and a walk to Curtis to load the bases. Senior Chris Jensen then grounded out to first base to end the inning and leave the bases juiced.
UC Irvine scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Danny McCarthy singled up the middle to advance Zach Robinson to third, as Robinson then scored on a fielding error by senior Josh Roenicke in center to tie the game at 1-1. UCI would go up 2-1 on a RBI single by Chad Lundahl. The Anteaters loaded the bases with one out, but freshman Jason Novak got Ben Orloff to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Anteaters took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run double down the right field line Cody Cipriano off of Oseguera.
UCLA exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead over the `Eaters. Curtis led off with a double down the right field line, and scored on a pinch hit triple by senior Brett McMillan. Ambriz followed with a pinch hit single to right to score McMillan and cut the UCI lead to 4-3. Murphy then hit a pinch hit double down the left field line to score Ambriz and tie the game at 4-4.
Roenicke followed with a RBI groundout to second base to score Smith from third and give UCLA a 5-4 lead. The Bruins would go up by two runs on a wild pitch that scored Murphy from third on a Babineau strikeout.
UCLA added two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-4 lead. Ambriz homered to right field to lead off the inning, and Babineau added a RBI single with two outs to give the Bruins a four-run lead.
Oseguera retired eight-consecutive Anteaters before giving up a base hit to Orloff to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning.
Ambriz pitched a perfect ninth to seal the deal.
UCLA will next host Stanford for a crucial three-game Pac-10 series beginning Friday, May 19 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
