UCLA head women's basketball coach Kathy Olivier announced today that Jamila Veasley of Valley Christian High School in Cerritos, CA has signed a letter-of-intent to play for the Bruins next season.
Veasley, a 6-1 forward who was a three-year starter, averaged 14 points and eight rebounds last season for the Olympic League champions. The Bruin signee was named the CIF Division 4-AA Player of the Year and a first-team All-CIF Division 4-AA. She was also a first-team all-league selection and the league's co-Most Valuable Player. In addition, the Long Beach Press-Telegram named her to the first-team of its All-Area squad.
"Jamila is an outstanding all-around frontcourt player with good instincts and leadership qualities," said Olivier. "She has the size and quickness to help us both inside as a rebounder, as well as on the perimeter with her defense. I am especially excited to add the sister of a former player to our team."
Jamila is the sister of Aisha Veasley, who played for the Bruins from 1995-1998. Aisha just completed her first season as an assistant women's basketball coach at Tulsa University.
UCLA finished the 1999-2000 season with an 18-11 record and placed fourth in the Pac-10 while making a school record third straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. Coach Olivier announced earlier this spring the signing of three junior college players -- Shalada Allen and Stacy Robertson of Kilgore, TX College and Malika Leatham of Blinn College in Brenham, TX -- who will enter UCLA this fall with junior class standing.
